Athens, Greece, February 21, 2020. Panathinaikos ATHENS claimed the 2019-2020 edition of the Greek League Cup ‘Nikos Samaras’ after two thrilling finals against Olympiacos PIRAEUS. The triumph coincides with the first title for the ‘Greens’ since 2010, when they won the Greek National Cup.

In the first match played at Melina Merkouri sports hall in Rentis, despite the fact that Panathinaikos were trailing 0-2, they managed to complete a terrific comeback and celebrate a 3-2 victory in the end (21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24, 15-10).

In the second final at Panathinaikos’ home court in Maroussi, Olympiacos caught everyone by surprise by achieving the same feat, making up for an early 0-2 deficit to secure a 3-2 (17-25, 26-28, 25-16, 25-19, 15-10) win. However, the ‘Greens’ emerged victorious (15-13) from the Golden Set to celebrate their first title in 10 years.

The Danish setter of Panathinaikos, Axel Jacobsen received the prize for the Most Valuable Player of the finals. “They were two very difficult matches. We believed from the first moment that we could win the title and we did it. The MVP trophy is just a bonus that I wish to dedicate to my amazing teammates and coaching staff,” said Jacobsen after the final.

Two matches full of emotions, turnarounds and amazing Volleyball actions were a true delight for the fans in attendance and those following from across Greece as well. The Greek League Cup ‘Nikos Samaras’ is the third most prestigious competition in men’s Volleyball and it pays tribute to Nikolaos Samaras, one of the best Volleyball players in Greece, who prematurely passed away on January 4, 2013.
